Worried about going tubeless? Dynaplug is the answer

Here at Freewheel, we're nothing if not relentless. Which is a perfect segue back onto one of our very favourite subjects: tubeless tyres. If you haven't tried tubeless yet then you really should. MTBers have been at it for years and you wont find a single one of them running a tube in a tyre except for in an emergency.

The main worry most people have about tubeless is puncture repair. Sure, tubeless setups can be a bit more of a pain than just sticking a tyre in a tube, but it's really not that hard and once you've done it you wont need to touch it for (hopefully) quite a while, so it's worth it. But punctures obviously represent a bit of a different issue. With a standard tube/tyre setup, you just take out the punctured tube, make sure there's nothing sharp stuck in the tyre, remount and get back riding. With tubeless there isn't a tube to replace, so you need to make sure that the tyre is sealed otherwise any air you add will leak straight out.

The first answer to that problem is sealant. Sealant is basically a liquid substance designed to clog up the hole as the air forces it out of the tyre. While this is undoubtedly a smart idea, it does have its flaws, one of which being that sealant on its own can only really close comparatively small cuts in a tyre - anything over a certain size makes it almost impossible for sealant to sort on its own, and that's where Dynaplug comes in.

The Megapill is a whole tubeless fix kit in one smart, bright-coloured package

To describe it on its base level, the idea behind Dynaplug is that the best way to close a hole in a tyre is to stick something in that hole. In this case, a plug made from viscoelastic rubber that not only fills that hole but is designed to stay there permanently. That's right, Dynaplug isn't a 'fix until you're home' solution. It will, in theory, keep that tyre going until it wears out (all things being equal, of course). You're not just getting the bike going again so you can limp home, you can carry on for as long as you like.

Using Dynaplug also solves the one big issue that has put a lot of road riders off tubeless: tyre pressures. Becuase road tyres run at higher pressures than road or gravel tyres, even the best sealants can struggle to plug anything more than a small cut in the tyre. But in combination with a plug, sealant becomes far more effective and using a combination of the two you can fix anything up to a pretty big puncture, and anything over a certain size isn't really fixable by replacing the tube anyway so with severe tears in the tyre you'll be in the same situation no matter whether you're running tubeless or tyres with inner tubes.

Dynaplugs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the sleek Racer Pro and the comprehensive, feature-packed Megapill, to the super smart, tyre-inflating Dynaplug Air and the latest Covert that sits in the bar end. You can check out the whole Dynaplug range on Freewheel here, and we also have sealant options from Vittoria, Finish Line and Nutrak.
