You probably know Vittoria as the makers of probably the finest road tyres on the planet, and some pretty great off-road tyres too. But they also make a whole host of helpful wheel-and-tyre-related accessories. Here's a look at some of the things they make that you may not know about...
What’s that, you ask, are people still riding tubulars? Well yes, and not just pros. You know, if you have a whole basement full of aging tyres, you’re not just going to check them all out, are you? Or perhaps you’re a seasoned racer who just trusts tubs. Or you like the ride feel. Or, just maybe, you like gluing things and riding tubs helps you combine that hobby with a love of cycling.
Either way, Vittoria’s Mastik is tubular glue par excellence. It’s powerful, easy to apply and cures in just 24hrs without needing multiple coats on tyre and rim like some other glues.
If you want to run your wheels tubeless, you need tubeless tape. Some brands – DT Swiss, for example – sell all their wheels tubeless-ready out of the box, meaning they come with the tubeless tape pre-installed. But for others, you need to add the tape to make them ready to forgo the inner tube.
You can also use tubeless tape to make some wheels that aren’t tubeless ready, tubeless ready. Plus, sometimes, even tubeless wheels need another layer of tape just to make sure that they’re air tight. That’s where this stuff comes in. The roll in the picture is 30mm wide (for MTB wheels, basically), but Vittoria sell it in 20, 25 and 30mm widths so whatever wheels you’re running, they have tubeless tape to fit.
If you’re running your wheels tubeless, you need tubeless valves since you usually use the value on the tube to inflate the tyre. Again, a lot of tubeless-ready wheels come with tubeless valves in the box, but if they don’t (or you fancy an upgrade), Vittoria do valves in 44, 60 and 80mm to fit whatever depth rims you have.
Sealant in tubeless tyres is important for two reasons: first, it helps you seat the tyres properly by blocking any places the air can escape between the tyre and the rim. Second, if you puncture, sealant seals the puncture (just like the name suggests) and lets you keep on riding.
Vittoria has a couple of types of sealant, both called Pitstop. The first one – in the bottle - is the TNT Evo off-road version, ready for Vittoria’s TNT (tube/no tube) tyres which are the MTB and gravel types but can also be used with standard UST tyres.
The second type is the wonderfully-named Pitstop Super Magnum or Pitstop Road Racing (in the can), which is a joint repair and inflate solution for high pressure road tubular and tubeless tyres. It works with both butyl and latex tubes that you’ll find in tubulars and on standard tubeless tyres as well. The great thing about it is that it’s been designed to be easily carried either strapped to a seatpost or in a jersey pocket, and you can load a tyre up Pitstop road racing before you ride, too, so it’ll seal any punctures you get while you’re on the go.
One of our favourite Vittoria products, the Zip Case is designed to fit into a bottle cage and contain all the tools and things you need if you puncture. It’s a cheap and elegant solution for anyone who doesn’t like filling up their pockets with stuff – or alternatively for anyone who likes to carry as much stuff as they possibly can and needs an overflow solution.
Tyre liners are designed to take up space in the tyre that would usually be filled with air. The idea is that the insert lets you run lower pressure while protecting the rim, and that in turn helps with tyre deformation, giving you better grip when cornering. Essentially, side-to-side tyre stability increase, while keeping the tyre soft and grippy. Smart stuff. Oh, and they’re for tubeless tyres only. Don’t try sticking one of these in a tyre with a tube. That wont work.
Vittoria makes these liners for a variety of MTB wheel sizes and tyre widths, as well as a gravel-specific liner for, er, gravel tyres.
