So you’ve bought Shimano Dura-Ace power meter? Nice work. There’s no better way to accessorise your Dura-Ace groupset than with the matching power cranks.

But have you tried using your power meter with Shimano’s E-Tube app yet? That’s the only way to unlock the full potential of the training tool on your bike. The power meter has dual Bluetooth LE/ANT+ connectivity, which means it can link to your phone or iPad without the need for an ANT+ dongle.

Click the text in the circle to search for your power meter after you've activated it by spinning the cranks

It’s simple, too. Just activate the power meter by spinning your cranks a couple of times, and log onto the E-Tube app. First off you’ll see the above screen and if you click on the icon in the middle your iPad will then search for compatible devices and you’ll be presented with a list (a list of one, unless you’ve just activated multiple power meters on multiple bikes).

Then you’ll be asked for the passcode. If this is the first time you’ve logged on the passcode for your power meter will be 000000. You can change it in the settings when you’ve logged in if you want to change it to something more secure.

Select your power meter from the list. It should be a list of one unless you have multiple devices on multiple bikes...

When you’re in, you get the main screen which is called ‘monitoring mode’ and essentially a larger version of the sort of screen you’d get on a head unit while riding, and it shows power on the left side and cadence on the right. If you turn the cranks you’ll see those numbers change from zero. You can also perform a zero offset calibration by pressing the button at the bottom, but we aware that for calibration your drive side crank arm needs to be a 6 o’clock.

At the top there are three icons. Monitoring mode is the middle one. On the left there is ‘Wireless Communication Mode’. This lets you choose whether the power meter sends signals using Bluetooth LE, ANT+ or both. For most people, you don’t need to change this as the default mode is both, which means no matter which protocol your head unit uses, it’ll be able to pick up the signals from the power meter.

This is monitoring mode. You can turn the cranks to get a read out on the screen, or perform a zero offset calibration

The right hand icon at the top is to update the firmware. This one is important because you need to keep the power meter up-to-date if you want it keep performing at its best. If an update in available, the text in the centre circle will change and if you tap that icon then the your device will download and update the power meter with the latest firmware. Make sure you keep the iPad close enough to the bike while it’s working, because if the update fails you’ll have to start all over again.

The firmware update screen is important. You need to keep your power meter firmware up-to-date to make sure it's working optimally

There’s also a menu on the extreme right side with an icon of three horizontal lines. If you tap that you see the below screen where you can choose a helpful tutorial that’ll take you through everything in this article step by step. You can also change the language of the app, configure the app’s settings, check that the app is also up-to-date and disconnect the app from the power meter (which is important because it’ll stop the power meter draining battery unnecessarily).

If you have any trouble using your power meter or think that it needs assessment by a professional, you can take it to a Shimano Service Centre (SSC). There are more than 50 in the UK and you can find the one nearest to you by using the dealer locator on the SSC website
